Dr. Seuss Mural

Here is an update of the Dr. Suess mural in progress. This is the focal wall, the first one you see as you walk into the room. It still needs details added like black outline and a couple more coats of red paint on the upper fish. I have been using house paint (latex based Behr paint) for this mural. In the future I will not do this again! Instead I will go back to using acrylic paint or a better quality latex based paint (such as Dunn Edwards, or Sherwin Williams). The Behr paint is wonderful for any color with white in the base. However, any Behr color that uses "Deep Accent Base" is not worth the money! The colors that use this base are transluscent and take more labor time to completely cover.... even with a good primer. So my advice is to stay away from any bright, vivid color from Behr. Spend the extra 5 or 10 dollars on a better paint!

Here is a close up of the fish in the left hand corner. As you can see it is not yet complete but almost there. I will touch up the edges with the blue paint and add some more fine detail with a paint pen.

This is the left wall... and the truffela trees are no longer just trunks! There is a character in there roaming around, not yet completed and for now just looks like a ghost wearing clothes. I am back to work tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Child's Room Mural

This is the children's room mural so far, the focal point wall. I started with the yellow background, 2 coats of Baby Bee Yellow Behr paint. Then I taped off the lines for the waves and water and painted two coats of Behr Shallow Sea. My next step was to draw out the characters. In the lower left you can see a yellow blob that will soon take the shape of a fish, and in the upper right you may be able to make out a pencil drawing of another fish jumping over the windows. All of what you see will be outlined in a black paint to give it a illustrated feel you get from cartoons and childrens' books. For now this is what I have completed.

The rest of the walls around the room include the hills in green, still water (blue) tuffela trees, which right are only yellow trunks, and outlines of other characters, that are hard to make out in the pics. I am purposely leaving space on the wall pictured above for anything the owner's may want to have on the wall. Also, it is nice to allow space for furniture, if the walls feel to cluttered, the room will feel smaller and it will take away from what will be in the room itself... and we can't do that!

I am back to work at it tomorrow and I will be finished at the end of this week.

Is This thing On?...

The start of something new. I am currently working on a mural for a little girl's room. My client's only request was for bright primary colors and some alphabet imagery. After a few sketches we have decided on characters from Dr. Seuss's books. I have focused mostly on a landscape theme, pulling images from "One Fish Two Fish" and "The Lorax". So far so good on this one. I hope to have images tomorrow for the blog. Stay tuned!
